Gender Roles in the Emirati Family

The current study aimed to identify the gender roles assigned to children at home through the speech directed from mothers to their children. A purposive sample of 20 Emirati women was selected and in depth interview was used. The results showed that there was a main role required of children (males and females) was to arrange their bedrooms, Boys roles were in the courtyard of the house such as look after the home garden, and the neighborhood they live in such as buy from the neighborhood grocer’s, Girls roles were benefit all family members, as they help their mother, serve their father, and take care of their siblings. The roles assigned to children are still unequal, as boys roles less than girls roles, this requires the UAE government to make efforts at the level of social institutions, most importantly the family, to achieve gender balance in the UAE society.
