This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of individuals recovering from addiction in the United Arab Emirates, through the lens of social stigma. The research focused on three key areas: the impact of social stigma on interpersonal relationships, access to economic and professional opportunities, and the development of self-esteem. A case study methodology was employed, and data was collected through semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 27 individuals who had completed recognized treatment and rehabilitation programs in licensed centers across the country.
The findings revealed that many recoverees face significant challenges in rebuilding their social relationships, as the effects of stigma often persist even after recovery. This stigma hinders their ability to reintegrate into society and often leads to feelings of rejection from both family and community. Furthermore, participants reported severe difficulties in securing appropriate employment, largely due to their prior history with substance use and the common requirement of a "certificate of good conduct." The study also found that social stigma contributes to lower levels of self-confidence among recoverees, negatively affecting their psychological and social stability.
Overall, the study concluded that individuals in recovery from addiction encounter complex and interrelated social, psychological, and professional challenges. It recommends the development of comprehensive support programs at multiple levels, along with community efforts to shift public perceptions and facilitate the reintegration of recoverees into society.
