Addicts' perceptions of drugs and their harms
A field study on a sample of visitors to the Erada Center for Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation in Dubai

The study aimed to identify addicts' perceptions about drugs and the harms resulting from them, and the statistically significant relationship between these perceptions and variables (gender, age, marital status, place of residence, educational level, and professional status). To achieve this endeavor, a sample social survey approach was used, using a questionnaire tool that was distributed to a voluntary sample of addiction patients affiliated with the Irada Center for Treatment and Rehabilitation in the Emirate of Dubai, and the number of respondents reached 93 patients.
The study concluded that the addicts’ perceptions about drugs and the harms resulting from them were positive, but these perceptions varied according to each aspect it addressed (health, psychological, and social), as it became clear that the addicts’ perceptions about the harms of drugs and their social dangers were primarily positive, This was followed by the addicts’ perceptions about the harms of drugs and their health risks, then the addicts’ perceptions about the harms of drugs and their psychological dangers. The study also found that the psychological aspect variable and the social aspect variable had an impact on the addict, even though the surrounding environment contributes to his high level of awareness about the harms that caused by drugs, However, his psychological abilities are weak, and the influence of psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts make him unable to overcome addiction, so this study recommends strengthening joint cooperation between addiction treatment and rehabilitation centers to create an integrated program that combines medical treatment and psychological and social support, so that these programs include plans To enhance perceptions (health, psychological and social) and strengthen the life and functional skills of addicts.
