This study aimed to identify young people's attitudes toward the causes of drug use and its effects on the family and society. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to a sample of 143 students at the University of Sharjah. The results showed that less than half of the participants (42.0%) believed that a weak religious conscience is a reason for drug use, while nearly half (41.3%) agreed that bad company is one of the individual factors leading to drug use. Additionally, 30.8% of the participants were uncertain whether traveling for recreation contributes to drug use.
The quantitative analysis revealed that the majority of participants agreed that individual, familial, and social factors—such as staying up late, entertainment, financial resources, negative experiences, family violence, parental or relative addiction, parental neglect, favoritism among children, free time, and the presence of drug dealers—are the primary reasons that drive young people toward drug use.
Furthermore, multiple regression analysis indicated a statistically significant relationship between gender, age, and education, whereas no statistically significant effect was found for the other independent variables.
