ان الغذاء كما اطلق عليه السومريون والبابليون akalu له حاجة لا يمكن للفرد الاستغناء عنه في حياته اليومية باعتباره المنتج الحقيقي للطاقة التي تستخدم في تغذية الانسان , وعلى اساسه بنيت الحضارات , حيث ادرك الانسان ان هناك حقيقة خالدة منذ عصور قديمة في ان بقائه مرهون في الطبيعة بشيئين هما الغذاء والتكاثر فبدون الغذاء لا يستطيع الانسان ان يعيش , وبدون التكاثر سيؤول مصيره الى الفناء ,ان موضوع الغذاء من المواضيع المهمة بحياة الانسان فلكي يعيش الانسان يجب ان يأكل, لذلك تعددت انواع الاغذية والتي اكتشفها الانسان العراقي القديم والتي توصلنا اليها من خلال النصوص المسمارية الاقتصادية التي ذكرت عدة انواع منها من خلال نصوص هذا البحث.
