Detection and Analysis of Forest Cover Changes in Northeastern Sulaymaniyah Governorate from 1982-2022
Using NDVI and IPVI Indices

This research aims to monitor the changes occurring in land cover over the period from 1982 to 2022 in the northeastern region of Sulaymaniyah Province, covering an area of 4,217.64 km², located between the latitudes of 35º 30' 0'' N and 36º 30' 0'' N, and the longitudes of 44º 45' 0'' E and 46º 25' 0'' E. Utilizing the NDVI and IPVI indices and remote sensing technology from Landsat satellites (3-5-7-8), and relying on ArcGIS 10.8 and Erdas 2014 software over two seasons, spring and autumn, the study results demonstrate that human activities have a significant role in altering the forested areas. The region experienced a noticeable increase in areas covered by dense and moderately dense vegetation according to the NDVI index, with a recorded increase of 13.14% in the area of dense vegetation. Meanwhile, the moderately dense vegetation class showed an increase of 30.97%, respectively. This can be attributed to reforestation efforts and improved environmental conditions, in addition to a focus on the sustainability of vegetation cover. The area of dense vegetation according to the IPVI index in 2022 increased by 457.81 km², from an area of 284.86 km², marking a spatial difference of 172.95 km², with a change rate of 60.71% of the total area of the study region
