Urban development in the Emirate of Sharjah and Heritage Preservation from 1971-2010

The housing sector in the United Arab Emirates has developed over more thane half a century to serve and maintain the stability and well-being of citizens. It has been concerned with aspects of living That suit the needs of the population, such as providing adequate housing and suitable land, and related services, facilities, and commercial facilities. From this point of view, the research deals with the development and growth of the housing sector in the country and the witnessed transformation in the quality of buildings which strive to reconcile harmony between the urban and aesthetic renaissance, and the preservation of cultural heritage, urban fabric and the identity of the country. The research traces the stages of urban growth and variation before and after the union. It also looks at the reasons that played a role in choosing residential designs in terms of their compatibility with the geography of the region, as well as the materials used, as this reflects the country’s resources and economy before and after the union. The research focuses on the Emirate of Sharjah as a model that has been able to keep pace with urban development while preserving its traditional character.
