Psychological and Health-related Causes of Divorce
A Field Study from the Emirate of Sharjah

This study aims to analyze the psychological and health-related causes leading to divorce in the Emirate of Sharjah, drawing on field data from a sample of 469 divorced men and women across the UAE. Using a descriptive–analytical approach, the study reexamines the psychological and health axes of a comprehensive questionnaire originally distributed across five dimensions. The findings indicate that psychological and personal factors are the most influential, with 72% of participants reporting that weak emotional communication played a central role in the divorce decision, while 68% noted significant behavioral changes in one partner after marriage, and 64% highlighted diminished mutual respect and excessive jealousy as direct contributors to marital breakdown. Furthermore, 57% reported experiencing psychological distress, such as anxiety or feelings of underappreciation, prior to separation. Health-related factors, though ranking lower, remain impactful; 42% of respondents stated that chronic illnesses in one spouse escalated marital tension, 38% identified infertility-related issues or disagreement over having children as contributing factors, and 35% noted that long-term psychological disorders added pressure to the marital relationship. Overall, the study concludes that psychological and health-related determinants form a critical core in understanding divorce in Sharjah, underscoring the need to strengthen family counseling services, expand psychological support programs, and enhance pre- and post-marital health education to foster more stable and resilient marital relationships.
