Aesthetic Construction and Narrative Perspective in Hikmat Al-Nawaisa’s Prisons: An Autobiography Between Illness and Imagination

This study aims to explore the artistic and structural composition of the autobiographical work "Prisons: An Autobiography Between Illness and Imagination" by the writer Hikmat Al-Nawaisa, by examining its narrative structures and its aesthetic and intellectual values—specifically in terms of vision and form. The research also investigates the most prominent techniques and narrative strategies employed in the text, along with the influence of the author’s illness experience in shaping his philosophical outlook and life perspective.
The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to highlight the key stylistic and artistic features of the autobiography, in addition to its aesthetic and intellectual connotations. The findings reveal that this autobiographical work represents a unique literary production that blends realism with artistic narrative, utilizing modern narrative techniques such as flashback, memory recall, stream of consciousness, temporal overlap, and descriptive narration, to emphasize both the artistic and psychological dimensions of the text. Moreover, the study demonstrates how illness served not only as a thematic element but also as a formative force that shaped the author's narrative vision and generated expressive strategies to convey his personal and literary experience.
Thus, this autobiography stands as a notable model of modern autobiographical writing, owing to its conscious balance between personal experience and artistic structure—making it a work worthy of critical examination and literary analysis.
