Terminology of the Health Field in Saudi Linguistic Discourse During the COVID-19

The study aimed to investigate the health-related vocabulary used during the COVID-19 pandemic through the tweets of Saudi users on the X platform. It focused on identifying the semantic fields of these terms, exploring the relationships between them, and tracing their semantic development. Adopting a descriptive method, the study analyzed a selection of health terms by defining their dictionary meanings, then examining their contextual usage to detect semantic changes. Core and marginal terms were identified and organized alphabetically within their semantic fields. The topics were also ranked according to the number of terms in each field. The findings revealed that the health-related vocabulary during the pandemic fell into various semantic fields, such as preventive measures, virus symptoms, and transmission methods. “Social distancing” and “lockdown” were found to be key terms, while “headache” was considered marginal. Semantic changes included narrowing (e.g., “contact”), broadening (e.g., “lockdown”), and meaning shift (e.g., “droplet”). The most common semantic relationship among terms was synonymy, appearing in 60% of the cases.
