تهتم الكثير من البلدان الديمقراطية بدراسة الانتخابات البرلمانية والرئاسية من اجل التعرف على مستويات المشاركة السياسية ونمط اتجاهات الناخبين ونسبة المشاركة من دورة انتخابية الى اخرى لكي تستطيع ايجاد الوسائل والسبل المساعدة في تحسين واقع العملية الانتخابية هذا من جهة ومن جهة اخرى التعرف على تفضيلات الناس السياسية ومزاجهم العام نحو السياسة ونحو النخبة السياسية، لأن الانتخابات هي الوسيلة الاكثر رقياً في تداول السلطة السلمي وهي المُعبر عن ارادة افراد المجتمع في اختيار حاكميهم، لذا جاءت دراستنا للانتخابات لتحاول التعرف على ما يميز السلوك الانتخابي للفرد العراقي خلال التجربة الانتخابية للفترة 2014 و 2018، وكذلك التعرف على الظروف الاجتماعية التي اثرت في توجهات الناخب العراقي بين مشاركة وعزوف وتذبذب هذه المشاركة، وقد تضمنت الدراسة خمسة مباحث رئيسية، اما اهم اهداف الدراسة فكانت التعرف على معنى السلوك الانتخابي واتجاهاته، البحث في اسباب تباين المشاركة في الانتخابات العراقية ، ومن النتائج التي توصلت اليها الدراسة هي: وجود تأثير كبير للظروف الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية التي مر بها البلد في حجم المشاركة السياسية لأفراد المجتمع العراقي مما ادى الى تذبذبها في الدورات الانتخابية السابقة، اختلاف تفضيلات الناخب العراقي عن كل دورة انتخابية وفق الحاجة الى وجود مرشح يحمل من ميزات وخصائص تشبع رغبات الناس وقادر على تلبية مطالبهم ووجود نسبة كبيرة من الاستياء المجتمعي بسبب الاداء الحكومي السابق ساهم في نسبة عزوف كبيرة في الانتخابات وخاصةً الدورة البرلمانية لعام 2018.
