The Effect of Word shortness and length on Comprehension and Communication
A Cognitive Morphological Study

This study represents a serious attempt to explore the impact of word length—whether short or long—on comprehension and communication in Arabic, from a perspective that combines morphological analysis with cognitive processing. It is based on the assumption that the number of letters and syllables is not merely a formal feature of the word, but rather a cognitive mechanism that directly affects ease of use and speed of reception. The Arabic morphological system, since its early formation, has established a delicate balance between lightness and heaviness, brevity and elaboration, thereby ensuring communicative efficiency across various contexts.
The study concludes that short words, especially biliteral and triliteral ones, are characterized by their phonological lightness and ease of circulation, whereas longer forms—whether through morphological augmentation or compounding—play a role in regulating the discourse level. It also highlights that mechanisms of morphological balance, such as deletion, substitution, and assimilation, are not merely formal alternations but strategies for achieving cognitive economy without compromising meaning. Furthermore, word frequency and repetition were found to reduce processing time in cognitive reception.
The findings demonstrate that word length constitutes a cognitive-morphological choice that preserves clarity of message while harmonizing form and meaning, reflecting the genius of Arabic in its linguistic economy and expressive richness.
