This research aims to examine the reality of family crimes and the level of awareness of preventive legislation in the UAE community. It seeks to document and analyze the types of family crimes common in the UAE, understand their causes, and assess the public's awareness of laws related to family crime prevention. Additionally, the study explores the challenges faced in implementing preventive legislation to protect families, as well as the influence of social factors like gender, age, marital status, and family size on the prevalence of family crimes and awareness of legislation. The research also compares the effectiveness of preventive legislation in the UAE with that of other countries to identify best practices.
A multi-method approach was employed, utilizing a descriptive analytical method alongside a social survey. A questionnaire was designed, tested for validity and reliability, and then distributed to a non-probability sample of 635 UAE citizens and residents. The sample was drawn from various institutions, including the Family Development Foundation in Abu Dhabi, the Ministry of Interior, the Department of Social Services in Sharjah, the University of Sharjah, and the local community.
The findings revealed that physical assault was one of the most common family crimes reported. Authorities were notified in such cases, although challenges included a lack of response from the aggressor. Other reported issues involved severe physical violence, violence against children, emotional coldness toward the wife, and weak relationships between siblings. The results also showed a high level of awareness of legislation related to family crime prevention, with no significant impact of gender on protection laws. Age showed no major effect on most protection laws, except for laws protecting the disabled, where the 36-45 age group demonstrated greater awareness. Education, particularly at the Master’s level, appeared to play a crucial role in shaping awareness and understanding of these laws.
