Abstract

The present study aims at revealing the relationship between cognitive consistency and its relationship with the self- image of the students, according to some demographic variables. To achieve the goals of the research, the researcher has built two tools; one of them is for measuring the cognitive consistency, which is made up of 16 items, whereas the other measures the self- image and is made up of (32) items. To ensure the validity of the two tools the researcher has presented them to a group of experts in psychology, after which it was applied to a sample of (215) students both male and female. After data was collected and statistically analysed, the stability of the cognitive consistency scale appeared to be (0.76), and the stability of the self-image scale (0.78). It has appeared that the university students have cognitive consistency before entering the university in favour of females. It has also been proved that university students have a positive self- image. Besides, there is a positive relationship between cognitive consistency and self-image. Finally, the researcher has recommended the need to provide opportunities for communication between students, and that variables should be studied on a different social stratum.
