The impact of landforms on tourism activity and its sustainability in Erbil Governorate

This study aims to analyze the tourism geomorphology of the Akoyan Valley Basin in Erbil Governorate, by examining landforms and their impact on tourism activity, with a focus on identifying potential geomorphological risks. Descriptive, analytical, and statistical approaches were adopted, using satellite images, maps, and geographic information systems (GIS), along with a digital elevation model (DEM) to analyze topographic data and evaluate tourism resources. The study results showed that the region has promising tourism potential, but some geomorphological hazards may impact human and tourism activities. The region was classified into three levels in terms of risk level: medium-risk lands, which are the most widespread and exploitable; low-risk lands, which are highly suitable for tourism development; and high-risk areas, which are concentrated in sites with steep slopes and geomorphological instability, The study began with an analysis of the natural characteristics of the study area in order to determine the extent to which these characteristics affect the geomorphological and tourism reality of the area. The impact of geomorphological features and processes on tourism activity was studied, and the risks affecting tourism were identified by creating a model of geomorphological hazards. A map for modeling potential was also drawn based on planning foundations and criteria to identify the most suitable areas for choosing the best tourist locations.
