Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the land cover and land uses in the People's Municipality in Baghdad Governorate through remote sensing and geographic information systems techniques, which provide data via the Landsat-7,9 satellite. A comparative study was conducted for the period 2000-2024 and digital processing was carried out, adopting the Anderson classification within The USGS system for classification, building a spatial database, calculating the area of each category and the percentages, and outputting them in the form of tables and maps. It includes five basic categories (urban lands and water, agricultural lands, orchards, abandoned lands, and water).

The results of the study showed that the human factor has a great impact on changing the environment of the region, as the area of agricultural land decreased greatly in the year 2024, occupying (9.99) km2 after its area was estimated at about (20.86) km2 in the year 2000, while urban lands witnessed a large increase in the area they occupy as a result of the exploitation of Large areas of agricultural lands, orchards and abandoned lands, after occupying (18.66) km2 in 2000, their area became (57.14) km2. Markov chains were used as a statistical tool to predict the development of land cover types in 2034, where the results showed the development of the urban mass to (72.82) km2 and a decrease in the areas of agricultural lands to (4.54) km2 and orchards (1.17) km2, as well as the areas of abandoned lands and water.
